     ATDps: April 2017 Chapter Meeting

Cultivating a Culture of Engagement and Accountability

Meliessa Ogrodowski, Director of Learning & Development at Craft Brew Alliance, will share how they are shifting their company culture to one of engagement and accountability using Cy Wakeman’s New York Times bestselling book and accompanying training program, Reality-Based Rules of the Workplace. With engagement levels at all-time lows and organizational efforts to improve employee engagement at all-time highs – it’s clear that something is not working. In this session, Meliessa will outline the unconventional and innovative concepts on which the Reality-Based Rules are based and will unveil the competencies and mind-shifting strategies they are teaching their workforce to realize greater levels of professional – and personal! – success and happiness. She will also share how their journey has evolved and what Craft Brew Alliance has learned about the keys to true culture change.

    Participants will walk away with:

    1. Clarity on the real drivers of employee engagement

    2. Techniques that lead to healthy thinking for great results and more happiness

    3. The crucial factors for driving successful culture change

This chapter meeting will focus on the Change Management and Performance Improvement pillars of ATD's overall competency model.

After more than 20 years working as HR Business Partner in a variety industries and companies, Meliessa’s career took an unexpected turn in 2014 when she was asked by current employer, Craft Brew Alliance (CBA), to build a Learning & Development function from scratch. Initial steps were focused on igniting a learning culture through inquiry, reflection and facilitated peer coaching. In 2015, CBA’s culture initiative evolved as top priority – to grow and develop a workforce that is nimble, driven and highly engaged in order to remain a leader in the very turbulent craft beer industry. Their experience is one that Meliessa now refers to as the professional equivalent to having a child – the most challenging and rewarding chapter in her career. CBA is enjoying significant positive business impacts from implementation of the Reality-Based programs and as a result, they continue to partner closely with Cy and her Reality-Based Leadership team.

     ATDps: May 2017 Chapter Meeting

This chapter meeting will focus on the Coaching competency of ATD's competency model. ATD defines coaching as a systematic process to improve others’ ability to set goals, take action, and maximize strengths. The best coaching encourages the coachee to tap their own creativity and resourcefulness in finding ways to experiment and grow.

This session will provide examples of how coaching has been used in organization as part of learning programs, and as an intervention for cultural change. We’ll review the elements of a great coaching conversation. Participants will also have a chance to practice some coaching skills that they can bring back to the workplace.

    9:30 AM – End

Can’t make the ATD International Conference in May? No problem! We have a great professional development event for ATD Puget Sound Members and Friends in downtown Seattle.

    Connect. Learn. Expand.

    LAP 3.0 hosted by

This year’s theme is Expanding Our Reach from Local to Global

    • How do you stay in tune with the continued globalization of organizations?
    • How do you keep up with how people learn when so much of it is learned in different ways through the use of technology and outside of classrooms?
    • How do we keep growing and developing our own professional needs?

In this session, we will look at how we can bridge the learning gaps across time zones and across different cultures. The ways we approach learning are very different than they were even a decade ago. In order to keep our practices current, we must stay ahead of this technological evolution, and that starts with getting the most out of today’s technology. Learn from top leaders who work through the people gaps, the diversity issues, and the technology to deliver world class learning.

The popular format of year’s past returns with a new slate of Speed Learning SMEs, keynote speaker, networking, and an afternoon mini-hackathon diving deeper into the theme.

    Programming features:

    • speed learning from 8+ SMEs
    • afternoon mini-hackathon
    • exploring Learning Design/LX, artificial intelligence, learning technologies, data science and other future-forward topics
    • morning keynote by Myra Travin and and lunchtime chat/keynote with Learn-a-palooza creator Darren Nerland and friends
    • networking with fellow participants and more!

The format for this event is conducted in open space in the lovely CityU Atrium. You'll have plenty of time to connect and collaborate with our amazing SMEs and participants. Come ready to learn and have some FUN!

This event has sold out the past 2 years!

     ATDps: June 2017 Chapter Meeting

Workplace Stories: Designing Engagement into Your Training Programs

We've all sat through sessions intended to convince us that we need to use stories in our learning programs. They try to teach us how to develop a story, wrap training in a story, or how to tell the story effectively. Stories are effective in learning because our brains are designed to receive stories. But what if your entire learning program was a story instead of just learning content with some stories sprinkled in?

Story has the power to move people and even change the world right from where you are at work. Learn specific techniques for an engagement design process using elements of story and how it differs from simply adding stories to your training.

This chapter meeting will focus on the Instructional Design and Training Delivery segments of ATD's overall competency model.

Katie Stroud has been designing instruction for over 13 years, usually in the high-tech industry. Frustrated with the dullness and ineffectiveness of training as both a developer and a participant, she felt there had to be a better way. In her observations she noticed two things: first, that people were either a catalyst or a barrier to success, and second, that no one could be successful on their own. Then she realized that story, designed well, had the power to change all that…

Katie founded Incremental Success in 2012 to help her clients design a story of success within their organizations. Follow Katie at IncrementalSuccess.com to watch these stories unfold.

Join us in Fremont on the first Thursday of each month to network, exchange ideas, resources, and leads, and enjoy good company! We welcome anyone and everyone who may be interested -- from the seasoned veterans to those just getting into the field of training and development.

We recommend pre-registering if you can, but it's not required. During the summer months, the group can be found out on the back patio. During the winter months, we're usually located inside in the farthest right corner. If you can't find us, ask the staff -- they'll send you in the right direction! For more information, email contact.us@atdpugetsound.org.

Connect with trainers and coaches, consultants and managers, those in other exciting jobs and those in career transition. Share ideas and resources, exchange leads, build relationships and above all, enjoy good company!

We meet at the Eastside Bar and Grill (downstairs) at Hotel 116 (formerly the Coast Bellevue Hotel) between 5:00-7:00 pm.  Arrive and leave as fits your schedule, this is informal. No pre-registration is necessary for the PDN. You are responsible for your own food and drinks (coffee or herbal tea, diet soda or draft beer, wine or martini . . .) Keep in mind, ATDps recommends to NOT drink and drive.

If you have any questions, please contact us at contact.us@atdpugetsound.org.  We look forward for others to volunteer with us as facilitators at future sessions.  As always, suggestions on the format, topics and alternative locations are welcome.
