On December 4th ATDps is celebrating Employee Learning Week 2017 with the debut of a new Members Only event. Our Under the Hood event brings ATDps members behind the scenes at local organizations. You will hear real case studies from internal talent development teams, discuss best practices, and tour the organization. Come learn how other Puget Sound organizations develop their talent.

Our first Under the Hood event will be at SightLife , the only global health organization working relentlessly to eliminate corneal blindness in the U.S. and around the world. Together, SightLife and SightLife Surgical are the largest providers of corneas for transplant in the world with deep experience in all aspects of eye banking and corneal transplantation. From eye donation to evaluation to transplant, we're there, working closely with hospitals, donor families, recipients and surgeons to provide the most advanced and efficient technologies available.

This is a members only event followed by a no host bar happy hour at Palamino

    Event Description

We’ve all had it happen—your employees did the compliance training, the required certification, the new content module, etc.—but a week later you realize that they retained nothing. Companies often overlook content that begs to be gamified—the very niche, complex, or boring content. Your new-hire orientations, compliance training, and required or annual certifications that your employees complete because they have to are the exact training that require your gamification investment to ensure the content isn’t glossed over and that your employees actually learn and retain the content and skills they need to succeed at work.

In this ATDps “Under The Hood” at SightLife, you’ll get a chance to learn how a three-day PowerPoint lecture series for new-hire orientation was revitalized by gamifying the experience, leaving lasting impact on its learners and making waves in the field of learning and development. You’ll learn all the game elements that you need to take niche or dry content and turn it into engaging in-person or online games that your employees will talk about for months. We’ll provide the tools and time to work on a project of your own and walk away with concrete methods to break major functions of your organization into a game that feels both approachable and grounded in reality. Let’s design an unforgettable experience that will promote your learning objectives and have sustainable impact.

In this session, you will learn:

    • Why gamification is so effective for making niche content accessible and engaging
    • How to work with SMEs to tease out vital content
    • About specific ways in which gamification can cultivate empathy among participants for the work performed by their colleagues
    • About game design elements that break down silos across the organization and enable people to see how their specific role impacts others across the company

Exploring Cognitive Diversity and Navigating Cultural Differences

Diversity and Inclusion is a top priority and strategic initiative for many talent management functions. This approach has strengthened their ability to work with global teams, both internally and with the clients they serve.

    The learning objectives:

    • Learn about cognitive diversity and how to encourage greater curiosity about invisible and cultural differences
    • Identify best practices to understand, interpret and anticipate invisible differences
    • Build greater competency in cross-cultural interaction

Building Efficient, Consistent Instructional Content Using a Practice-Centered Model

Common Instructional Design models, from ADDIE to SAM, focus on repeatable, scalable processes to identify needs, build content, and evaluate that content. While these processes are critical to creating effective learning experiences, they don’t provide much guidance for how to create actual learning content in a repeatable, scalable way. As a result, training content is frequently inconsistent in quality and style and doesn’t focus adequately on practice with feedback in real-world scenarios. By following a simple, 4-part content model that utilizes worked examples, completion problems, and practice problems, training teams can create learning experiences that are consistent and high-quality. Chad will walk through the model that he has deployed in large, complex training teams and explain how it allows novices and skilled designers to create content that delivers results.

    Learning Objectives

After participating in this session, you’ll be able to organize learning content into four parts using a practice-centered model to maximize efficiency and consistency throughout your training organization.

Workplace Stories: Designing Engagement into Your Training Programs

We've all sat through sessions intended to convince us that we need to use stories in our learning programs. They try to teach us how to develop a story, wrap training in a story, or how to tell the story effectively. Stories are effective in learning because our brains are designed to receive stories. But what if your entire learning program was a story instead of just learning content with some stories sprinkled in?

Story has the power to move people and even change the world right from where you are at work. Learn specific techniques for an engagement design process using elements of story and how it differs from simply adding stories to your training.

This chapter meeting will focus on the Instructional Design and Training Delivery segments of ATD's overall competency model.

Katie Stroud has been designing instruction for over 13 years, usually in the high-tech industry. Frustrated with the dullness and ineffectiveness of training as both a developer and a participant, she felt there had to be a better way. In her observations she noticed two things: first, that people were either a catalyst or a barrier to success, and second, that no one could be successful on their own. Then she realized that story, designed well, had the power to change all that…

Katie founded Incremental Success in 2012 to help her clients design a story of success within their organizations. Follow Katie at IncrementalSuccess.com to watch these stories unfold.
