    About Starbucks

Starbucks began in 1971. Back then we were a roaster and retailer of whole bean and ground coffee, tea and spices with a single store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Today we are privileged to connect with up to 90 million customers each week to deliver the Starbucks Experience in more than 28,000 retail stores in 76 markets around the globe.

    Being a Responsible Company

Starbucks has always been committed to having a positive impact on our partners, our customers and on the communities we serve- one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time. We are re-defining the role of a for-profit company by focusing on areas where our commitment and scale can make the biggest impact:

    • Making coffee the world’s first sustainable agricultural product by doing our part to improve the lives of 1 million people in coffee communities around the world.
    • Building and operating the world’s largest green retail business, minimizing our environmental footprint and inspiring others to do the same.
    • Investing in pathways to opportunity through education, training and employment.
    • Strengthening communities by welcoming all and creating impact on issues that matter.
    Starbucks Mission

To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.

ATDps: May 2018 Seattle Chapter Meeting

Learning at the Speed of Lean

Lean, the system of eliminating non-valued activities and increasing value, is used in the operations of manufacturing, aerospace, software, service and healthcare with great success.

The blistering pace of change, far flung employees, sky-high expectations, and the explosion of digital technologies make today a turning point, and an incredible opportunity, for learning organizations to embrace radical new thinking and methods.

Concepts and tools like customer value, real demand, value streams, the Eight Training Wastes and ‘build to order’ can dramatically improve ROI. However, activities like assessing needs and creating and deploying content will change dramatically. This is no different than for every industry and company that has embarked on practicing Lean.

Be provoked, practice using ‘Lean Learning’ tools and begin your Lean journey here.

    Learning objectives

    1. Apply key Lean concepts

    2. Build and analyze a value stream

    3. Distinguish between real demand and artificial demand

    4. Identify training wastes

    5. Reduce cycle time and implement ‘build to order’ training and learning

    Todd Hudson hates waste.

As a long-time Lean practitioner and Six Sigma Black Belt with decades of lean operations management experience, he’s seen everything the business world can throw at you. From frenetic growth and high volume, to cutting out fat, cutting into muscle and cutting your own throat.

Todd was a continually disappointed and frequently annoyed customer of traditional training approaches. In the late 1990’s, he pioneered applying Lean to training in his workplace and began helping companies implement ‘Lean Learning’ in 2006.

He holds an MS Engineering from UMass and a BA Chinese from Connecticut College.

Now in its 4th year, Learnapalooza is bigger than ever. This is the only spring Learning and Talent Management Conference held in the Pacific Northwest.

This is not like your typical conference. This conference is about disruption and innovation in the learning industry, so the conference itself disrupts itself each year by doing things a little different each time. The day will kick off with breakfast and an ice breaker with Caveo, followed by a keynote from Chris Pirie and Ludo Fourrage of Microsoft. Then- Speed Learning! This is like speed dating, but for learners. In the afternoon there will be Maker Labs where even a novice can build bite size learning or participate in team building games. In addition, you will find a "Conversation Corner" where one can discuss future work, how jobs might change and what can be done to prepare for that exciting future. There will be ample networking and community building! Rumor also has it of a surprise guest at the end to inspire and close out the day.

Want to be part of this forward thinking and exciting event?

As a partner to Learnapalooza, ATD Puget Sound is offering its membership partner pricing.

Get 10% off the registration price by entering the code “PARTNER” at check out.

Connect with trainers and coaches, consultants and managers, those in other exciting jobs and those in career transition. Share ideas and resources, exchange leads, build relationships and above all, enjoy good company!

No pre-registration is necessary for the PDN. You are responsible for your own food and drinks (coffee or herbal tea, diet soda or draft beer, wine or martini . . .)
