Building Culture and Driving Change - Messaging in Challenging Times

    EVENT DESCRIPTION

Tell the truth – do you welcome disruption in your personal life, in your work team, in your organization? Embracing change is not a natural human reaction – fight or flight are more common responses, even when cracks are showing in the status quo. In a world moving at internet speed, changing to meet new threats and take advantage of new opportunities is necessary, but how can leaders make the pace manageable and do their best to ensure successful transitions for individuals, teams, and organizations?

Critical communications consultant Bryan Rutberg will share his playbook for helping leaders and their organizations drive change while building a change-embracing culture. Bryan’s work with organizations from local nonprofits to Fortune 500 companies when they need to plan just the right message and to drive it with a targeted and inclusive communication plan. He’ll share stories and tips from his 20-year corporate career and his subsequent experiences as the principal of 3C Comms, a Seattle-based critical communications firm.

Participants in our monthly meeting will learn key ingredients to driving successful change including:

    • Clear, thoughtful, and directive communications
    • Building a strong and positive messaging framework
    • Developing a management vision and style including adaptability and learning as key pillars

As always we will have time for questions.

    Bryan Rutberg

Bryan is a strategic communication professional serving leaders and organizations with critical messaging needs. He takes great pride in finding the right story when the stakes are high.

Bryan works with executives and organizations on high-stakes communications, including role-switching leaders seeking greater success, teams driving key initiatives like mergers/acquisitions, and organizations launching new products or programs. In addition to bespoke consulting, he offers workshops and group coaching on message development, storytelling, and public speaking skills.

Over his 25+ years as a professional communicator, Bryan climbed the ranks at HP, McKinsey & Company, and Microsoft, where he ran the Executive Briefing Center and served as speechwriter to a member of the company's senior leadership. In addition to his professional interests, Bryan has served on community and nonprofit boards and regularly volunteers for causes close to his and his family's hearts. Bryan received his MBA from the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his BA in English Literature from Georgetown University. He lives in the heart of Seattle with his wife of 25 years and their two dogs, Raven and Spotty. Two amazing grown children, Jamie and Teddy, remain in the Puget Sound region.

This chapter meeting will focus on the Change Management pillar of ATD's overall competency model.

Your Personal Dashboard: Recognizing the Signals Before You Crash

    EVENT DESCRIPTION

Our bodies did not come with early warning signals. We don’t have idiot lights on our forearms that tell us when our blood pressure is elevated, our HRV is low, or when our sleep is not sufficient.

While we do not have red flashy lights, we DO have indicators of our own stress and/or wellbeing. To be completely effective, limit our own counter-productive behaviors, and to be more resilient--we need to be aware of our own personal dashboard.

During this interactive session with guest facilitator, Brian Nelson, we’ll discuss how to use a personal dashboard in all aspects of our lives (physical, mental, emotional, and environmental). Participants will explore how to recognize indicators of stress, fatigue and non-resilience in order to make changes before experiencing poor performance or moments of regret.

Here's to a great night of discovery!

    Discussion topics:

    • Interpreting our results and how to make changes
    • Create tripwires of awareness
    • Implement changes for greater success

    Speaker Bio

Brian Nelson, Leadership Consultant, is co-founder of Grit360, a consulting firm for mental skills, character and leadership development

    The Broadcast Interest Group (BIG)

Podcasts and podcasting (both audio- and video-based) have become a true Internet phenomenon over the past few years, and it is clear that this dynamic medium for sharing information, ideas, and storytelling continues to grow and evolve. The Broadcast Interest Group (BIG) is a gathering of talent development professionals who want to learn more about what podcasting is; where the podcasting revolution is taking us as a profession and as a society; and how we as communication professionals can help shape podcasting’s future in our fields and beyond. The group uses the term “broadcasting” to emphasize podcasting’s deep roots in radio (and television) history, which is rich in experimentation/innovation with human communication.

Members of this group can participate as complete novices to podcasts and podcasting, as podcast listeners/fans, and/or as as seasoned podcasters. All are welcome to share, learn, and collaborate as a “community of practice.” A focal point of the group will be the ATDps Podcast, currently produced and hosted by Scott Melanson for the Puget Sound Chapter. The overall goal is for the Chapter’s podcast to benefit from the feedback, expert advice, and hands-on assistance members of this group are willing to provide. The ATDps Podcast will be our “sandbox” for practical, hands-on experience, as well as for podcasting experimentation and innovation.

BIG will meet once a month virtually, as well as in-person quarterly. The in-person meetings will take place alternately in downtown Seattle and downtown Bellevue. Dates of all BIG events will be listed in the ATDps Events Calendar.

Please be sure to retain your confirmation email as the Zoom Meeting information and access will be included on both it and the day before reminder.

Learning Transfer Strategies: Supercharge Your Training

    EVENT DESCRIPTION

It is not unusual for training to be designed without much thought to how an organization will evaluate learning impact. Incorporating Learning Transfer Strategies into instructional design supercharges your training. It provides ways of evaluating training success and making sure desired behavior changes stick. How much of the training you deliver is quickly forgotten and never applied? This has little to do with what happens before or during training delivery and everything to do with what happens afterwards. This interactive session draws on the group knowledge to identify why you want to use Learning Transfer Strategies, what they are, and how the effectiveness of them (and associated training) can be measured. Participants will have an opportunity to identify Learning Transfer Strategies they can incorporate into their own training initiatives and ways to measure the success of related behavior change.

    Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

    • Define Learning Transfer Strategies
    • Discuss the benefits of using Learning Transfer Strategies
    • Decide when the use of Learning Transfer Strategies is most appropriate
    • Identify different Learning Transfer Strategies they can add to their training initiatives
    • Determine different ways of measuring the effectiveness of Learning Transfer Strategies and associated training.

THE COACH APPROACH: Leveraging Coaching to Improve Performance

    EVENT DESCRIPTION

Whether in the role of coach or client, use of the key skills of coaching (effective listening, asking powerful questions, and providing direct feedback) can lead to greater performance through its focused, goal-oriented approach. Regardless of the type of coaching, how it’s used, or for which industry, the customized nature of coaching is ideal to move a “coachee” from the current state to a desired future state as measured by the goals set within the coaching engagement, in turn raising the performance and engagement level of the client as well as that of the coach.

This interactive session will provide tools and job aids for your tool kit, whether you have experience with coaching, don’t know anything about it, or are somewhere in between. Bring your questions, curiosity, and open mind to start leveraging coaching in your work for greater performance!

After the session, participants will be able to:

    • Describe and apply the three key skills of effective coaching;
    • Implement a coaching process for increased performance; and
    • Evaluate performance through the use of coaching.
