President's Message

What do you know? Are you sure it is accurate? My mentor for Lean Six Sigma training told me to always write a false number on the board to see if anyone questioned it. “Make them question data” is what he would always say. A person that questions data and then acts on that data will be successful. Your ATDps board has a position dedicated to this very purpose- to be data curious. Our Director of Research, Erin Clarke is dedicated to reviewing all of the survey responses and then asks additional questions to better serve our members.

We stress at ATDps to capture data and analyze the return on investment. It is something we take very seriously as your board. We have reviewed the data from our multiple surveys and have implemented a major change that we think you will appreciate.

Our data stated that our members wanted regular meeting times and places with topics announced in advance. In the same data, our members stated that they wanted different times and locations options. We wrestled with this data as a board and through data mining and additional surveys we have met both needs.

You will see is that our chapter meetings are back to a regular cadence being on the third Tuesday of the month at the Mercer Island Community Event Center. Additionally, our chapter meetings are almost scheduled out for the entire year!

In addition, we have six interests groups that meet regularly with varying topics.  Lastly, we have our Director of Special Events, Erin Peterschick planning our next Learn-a-palooza for June and the Workplace Learning Conference scheduled for October 12-13th.

We take survey data seriously but there are other ways we collect data. We collect through comments given to us, emails, and sometime by the lack of response is a data point we collect. We have found as a board that we have to collect different kinds of data. You may see more surveys via email or in-person. We value your feedback and hope you will be candid with us. We hope you will join us. We hope you will connect with us via surveys, emails, phone or in person.

Get engaged. Explore possibilities. Be happy.

Membership Highlight

“I’m a great believe in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.”

-Thomas Jefferson

March is probably my favorite month of the year. Spring is starting to peak around the corner, the days are getting longer and most of the time, and trees begin to show their green. (“Leaf-pop out day” as we celebrate in my family).

And we get to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

I love to metaphor of a seed germinating and beginning to grow, or a bud finally opening to the world. Actualizing potential is fraught with risk, bravery, and beauty.

As longer days and a closer sun begin to stir dormant life, what are some new beginnings you can make in your life?

Warmly,

Kyle McCurdy

Research

I am very excited to have taken on the Director of Research role this year.  With any new role, comes lots of learning. Good thing I am pretty passionate about learning ;-) One thing I learned so far is that with a membership to ATD National, you get access to a whole library of research reports and whitepapers, did you know that?

I also learned that each ATD Community of Practice has a blog, which means there is one for Science of Learning. Check it out, and learn with me this month!

I would love to hear your thoughts,

Erin Clarke
