What makes a product memorable? How does an experience transform from informational to inspirational?  Behind every pleasant user interaction is a well-thought-out user experience.  The need for implementing a thoughtful and impactful user experience (UX) has grown rapidly in recent years, with LinkedIn labeling it #5 among the most in-demand hard skills in 2020 However, in order to create an effective UX, it's first important to gain a foundation in a UX professional's #1 tool: the User-Centered Design (UCD) process.

In this workshop, attendees will receive a hands-on experience in exploring every aspect of the UCD process, from research techniques, design strategies, and usability testing.  By the end of the session, attendees should feel equipped with knowledge on how they can become larger advocates for their end-users and how UCD will enhance future products or experiences that they create.

About the Presenter:

Julius Magsino has spent the past 10+ years supporting professional user experience efforts at various companies and groups, including T-Mobile, Microsoft and the University of Washington.  Throughout his time at T-Mobile, Julius had the opportunity to apply his user-centered design knowledge in assisting 110K+ retail employees across the United States and Puerto Rico.  His contributions have helped transform and standardize a number of user experiences for sales tools and learning & development processes, earning various awards including the Annual T-Mobile Winners Circle Award in 2019, given to the Top < 1% of employees in the company.

This year, Julius has shifted focus to the health industry, supporting 98point6 as a Senior User Experience Designer.  Along with his UX team, Julius is responsible for designing various member-specific experiences that help promote a more affordable and accessible primary care experience.  With recent events making healthcare more relevant than ever, Julius is excited to discover how UX can continue to help move the health space forward in new and innovative ways.

Outside of work, Julius is also a large advocate for the growth of the UX community through skills building and development.  Graduating from the University of Washington's Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) program (MS 2014, BS 2012), he serves as a Board Member for the HCDE Alumni Leadership Board. Through the group, he assists HCDE Alumni with building career connections and mentoring opportunities.  Julius is also a volunteer member for UX STRAT, an organization that promotes the sharing of methodologies and tools focused on strategic design and innovation among worldwide design and product professionals.  In addition, Julius continues to serve as a professional mentor to a number of new or aspiring designers/researchers via work, local hackathons and UX-related organizations.  Interested in UX mentorship opportunities? Feel free to reach out to Julius via LinkedIn.
