Redlining - For most of its history Seattle was a sharply segregated city, as committed to white supremacy as any location in America. People of color were excluded from most jobs, most neighborhoods and schools, and many stores, restaurants, hotels, and other commercial establishments, even hospitals. As in other western states, the system of severe racial discrimination in Seattle targeted not just African Americans but also Native Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, people of Mexican ancestry, and also, at times, Jews.

In recent months/years the term "woke" has been thrown about without much context or definition. This is not without intention. Woke, CRT, Political Correctness, and many more terms initially started in one context and morphed into negative terms across the nation and the world. In this DEI with Delgado, we will discuss the intentionality of placing negative terms to verbiage used to minimize, discredit, and further marginalize communities of color.

There are so many terms and definitions that it is simply mind-blowing. This DEI with Delgado will discuss the multiple "isms" we discuss in the DEI world that greatly impacts employee engagement and organizational objectives. Racism, Colorism, Ageism, Sexism, and that's just scratching the surface. Let's discuss the nuances of these "isms" and how they show up in our professional and personal lives.

Covering - Covering is the act of hiding or downplaying aspects of one’s identity in order to try to match—or to avoid violating—the norms of a group. This often involves aspects of a person’s identity that they believe will be viewed negatively or result in mistreatment, such as those related to their culture, ethnicity, gender, or sexuality, among many others. How does this show up in your workplace if at all? What is the impact in your organization?

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) also known as “Affinity Groups” in certain circles first began with Xerox in the 1960s. Employees formed a group to address race-based issues and concerns in their workplace. This led to what we refer to as ERGs. ERGs provide several benefits for organizations. In a 2022 article in the Association for Talent Development (ATD), Ilit Raz identified some of these benefits. These benefits are as follows:

    •  Attract top talent
    •  Expand company’s network
    •  Encourages professional development
    •  Keeps employees engaged
    •  Fosters inclusion

By now we have all heard the team silver tsunami but what does this mean as a large part of the workforce choose to continue to work in an environment that is seemingly geared toward newer generations. Organizations must find ways to attract the next generations of workforce while leveraging and acknowledging the historical knowledge that more tenured employees used to build the foundations of the company.

DEI is a journey not a destination. As you may be aware or heard, demographics are changing. In 2019, Pew Research reported on how “Americans have mixed views about how the country might change when blacks, Hispanics, Asians and other minorities make up a majority of the population. While more say this change will be good for the country than say it will be bad, the predominant view is that it will be neither.” How will this shift impact the ability to further develop and grow internal talent pools or attract more diverse candidates into your organizations?
