President's Message
Nicole Forward

We’ve all had difficult people in our lives at one point or another. The list often includes bosses, co-workers, direct reports in the workplace and/or in-laws, customer service professionals, spouses and children in our personal lives. When we think of difficult people, we often think of others. But have you ever considered that at some point, you were probably someone else’s difficult person? Why were you being difficult? It’s often because we are trying to get a need met. We tend to label people as “difficult” when they aren’t seeing things our way, disagreeing with us, or making things more challenging (from our perspective). But have you ever considered flipping that entire idea around and giving it a different name? Instead, what if we encouraged people to disagree with us, question our thinking and make things (seemingly) more challenging? What would that mean for us as workplace learning/ talent development professionals and as leaders?

A wise person told me once that “difficult people are simply your teachers.” Admittedly, there are times when that perspective was really hard for me to swallow because I was wrapped up in the emotions of it all. It can be exhausting or even ego-threatening to be challenged, argued with and told our way of thinking isn’t shared by others. Then, we have a “fight or flight” reaction by either avoiding/ ignoring them, or challenging them to the fight, which only results in strained relationships or a power struggle. It’s certainly easier to surround ourselves with people who are similar to us - they understand us, validate who we are, make us more comfortable. They help us feel more secure and make us believe we have solid footing when we are trying to make big changes, get things done or embark on risky new projects. But when you reflect on some of the best leaders you’ve ever known, were they people who surrounded themselves with like-minded individuals, or did they surround themselves with seemingly “difficult” people whom challenged their thinking? The most successful leaders are the ones whom view difficult people as teachers and as a result are willing to change direction. And if an actual change of direction isn’t observed often enough, others will lose faith in your ability to truly listen and lead.

Ho do you react when someone is behaving in a way that appears to be “difficult”? Do you view difficult people as teachers and the situation as an opportunity for you to learn something? I’d love to hear your difficult people stories and the lessons you’ve learned from them.

Listen with curiosity. Shift paradigms. Be brave and lead.

Ken Phillips will be facilitating
47 Tips and Best Kept Secrets for Designing Level 1-4 Evaluations
October 27, 2015 | 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
@ Mercer Island Community and Event Center
8236 SE 24th Street, Mercer Island, WA 98040

No matter how well you design and deliver learning within your organization, you are probably experiencing increased demands to demonstrate how your learning programs impact business results.  Unfortunately many learning and development professionals struggle with this because they are simply uniformed in the art and science of evaluation design.  Now Phillips Associates fills that gap with this comprehensive, highly relevant seminar.

This in-depth, one-day workshop provides practical tips and specific guidelines for creating valid, scientifically sound Level 1, 2, 3, and 4 evaluations that produce data with high-perceived value.  These tips and guidelines are based on current education and behavioral science research findings in survey design and test creation methodology.

Space is limited for this special event, Register Today.

ATDps Research Survey

I love the breadth of the ATD competencies. To me, they paint a picture of the challenges that learning professionals face and the tremendous potential they have to equip organizations to succeed. I appreciate that the competencies give us a focus that grounds us amidst what feels like chaos in a rapidly changing environment.

While we can’t “boil the ocean”, we can zero in on one competency that can shed light on other options and next steps. The foundational competencies provide a great platform, while the other competencies offer ways to grow and stay creative in implementing learning programs.

As the director of research, I am particularly fond of Evaluating Learning Impact. I spent the early years of my career writing documentation. I thrived on sharing the possibilities of what people could do that hadn’t been possible before. But the toughest thing was knowing whether we were helping customers. The lack of data made it difficult to really know that our materials were making a difference, which often left us guessing on the best things to do.

The members of ATD Puget Sound board want to be sure we’re not guessing. We’re keenly interested in your thoughts about the chapter, the programs, and what you find valuable. We want to be sure we’re tracking with you in these times of rapid change.

Please take a moment follow this link to respond to our survey. The survey closes October 16th.

Volunteer Opportunities

One thing I know; the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve.

- Albert Schweitzer

Have you ever thought about giving back through becoming someone’s mentor? Having mentors has been a huge accelerator and added lots of value to my own career. Mentors often receive just as much value from the relationship as their mentee.

I would encourage you to either find a mentor or become one. Or both.

Interesting Fact: The term “mentor” comes from Homer’s epic “The Odyssey”. When Odysseus left to fight in the Trojan War he left his close friend Mentor to help raise his son and take care of his affairs.

In looking for a mentor or mentee, or searching for a way to give back, volunteering for ATD Puget Sound is a great place to start.
