The Impact of Cherished Beliefs on Personal and Organizational Effectiveness with David Porter

In the best of all worlds people (and organizations) would be “un-reasonable”. They would be without reasons, excuses, and justifications.  They would recognize and acknowledge actual results and speak the unvarnished truth. Reasonableness, however, is a well-accepted, face-saving position.  When things don’t go the way we want, there is for many an immediate denial of results or a compulsion to fix blame – to look beyond themselves for the reasons why or why not.  We get into the habit of buying our own basic stories (BS).  The danger is that these fabrications create “reasons barriers” that get in the way of what we want.  Consider the notion first on a personal level then within an organizational context.

Outside the glare of public view I can acknowledge and accept that my reasons barriers are not actually out there or beyond me.  The opposite is true; they are really personal. It is the things that I like about me, the things I affirm about myself that most often generate reasons barriers.  I call these things to which I am so draw “cherished beliefs”. What is a cherished belief?

  • It is an affirmative statement - something about me (or my situation) that I find attractive or admirable, expressed as an opinion or perspective
  • It has no negative context or pejorative overtone.
  • It is usually true about me but not completely true.
  • I want it to be even more true…and validated.
