Putting Performance Improvement in the Hands of Managers
Carl Binder & Cynthia Riha,The Performance Thinking Network

In most organizations, day-to-day decisions about how to get the best out of people rest in the hands of managers, not performance consultants. The challenge is to make what are usually complex and somewhat geeky methodologies from research on human performance more lean, practical, and straightforward for day-to-day application. The impact of research-based performance improvement methods and tools will be greatest when line managers and leaders are able to easily apply them. With the right tools they can create practical solutions for increasing productivity, quality, customer satisfaction, regulatory compliance, safety, employee engagement, and other targeted results.

This session describes how using two simple models and the plain English language of the Six Boxes® Approach can help leaders and managers pinpoint performance for improvement or development, assess current conditions that either enable or obstruct target performance, and create practical action plans to establish new performance or accelerate existing performance. The presenters will show you how what they call “performance thinking” can help managers connect the day-to-day activity of their people to key business results and create easy-to-implement plans to improve results.

Attending this session will help managers and those who serve them do a better job of:
- deciding what performance to target and how to describe it
- selecting measures to monitor performance improvement
- integrating all kinds of management practices and tools into a single framework, and
- creating practical action plans partnering with direct reports to accelerate performance.
