President's Message | ||||||
Perspective has been on my mind lately; particularly, perspective during times of conflict. How do we remain composed when that hot button is pushed and we feel pressure? What is the other person thinking? How do we keep our perspective in check and assume the best of intentions? Could conflict really be an opportunity to grow and learn? I’ve heard conflict described as the gap between what we were expecting and what is actually happening (or happened). I’m sure you are just like me and experience conflict many times a day. Why is it so hard for kids to put on shoes? Why didn’t she meet that deadline? You wanted me to do what? It’s there, all the time. The gap. In conflict we often feel pressure and pressure tends to narrow our focus and give us tunnel vision. This restricted view may cause us to misunderstand intentions and sometimes even miss opportunities. In his latest book, “Composed: The Heart and Science of Leading under Pressure”, Dr. Rob McKenna discusses stepping back when under pressure to view the big picture as if on a balcony instead of viewing the situation through a pinhole. “…seeing the big picture when we’re under pressure is a strategic move that allows us to see opportunities that we would otherwise miss.” Stepping back, often taking a pause, provides that opportunity for conflict to provide perspective, which gives us the opportunity to learn from it. A good friend recently challenged me to put myself in another person’s shoes when I feel that pressure from conflict. What I’ve learned from that activity is that if I remove my filter and the critical voices in my head that assume negative intent, the issue is rarely ever as personal as it felt initially. That perspective-taking makes it so much easier to move towards a solution. As a result, I’ve been intentionally taking time to listen to other’s perspectives in order to better understand, instead of just argue my own agenda. Additionally, the exercise of using “yes, and” has helped me with this work on perspective to help me through conflict. This word choice encourages building on someone else's point instead of using the ever defeating term “but”. When the word “and” is used, people feel heard, valued and empowered. I’m not perfect, but I am learning! What are you doing to remain calm, cool and collected when you feel that conflict arising? Please share, I would love to learn from you! How will you engage, learn, develop and grow with us in 2018? Erin Clarke President |

ATDps Seattle Chapter Meeting - Learning at the Speed of Lean May 15, 2018 | 7:30 - 9:30 AM | Mercer Island Community and Event Center
Lean, the system of eliminating non-valued activities and increasing value, is used in the operations of manufacturing, aerospace, software, service and healthcare with great success. The blistering pace of change, far flung employees, sky-high expectations, and the explosion of digital technologies make today a turning point, and an incredible opportunity, for learning organizations to embrace radical new thinking and methods. Concepts and tools like customer value, real demand, value streams, the Eight Training Wastes and ‘build to order’ can dramatically improve ROI. However, activities like assessing needs and creating and deploying content will change dramatically. This is no different than for every industry and company that has embarked on practicing Lean. Be provoked, practice using ‘Lean Learning’ tools and begin your Lean journey here. Key Takeaways: 1) Apply key Lean concepts 2) Build and analyze a value stream 3) Distinguish between real demand and artificial demand 4) Identify training wastes 5) Reduce cycle time and implement ‘build to order’ training and learning Agenda:
