Summer Program Coordinator

Program Overview: The Summer Learning Program is an academic program for elementary-aged students in Southeast Seattle, hosted by East African Community Services. Students will engage in academic instruction, enrichment and cultural activities, and recreation. This six-week program will be held four times per week, Monday through Thursday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm at New Holly Learning Center (7050 32nd Ave S., WA, 98118). The program will serve approximately 75 elementary-aged students primarily from low-income and public housing families.

Position Title: Summer Program Coordinator

Reports To: Volunteer and Education Coordinator

Position Description:

 As a Summer Program Coordinator you will plan activities and lessons for the students and track the progress that each student makes through the summer. In terms of someone to plan activities, EACS is seeking an individual who has both the resources and imagination to create engaging lessons that follow Common Core Standards. The Summer Program Coordinator will also be in charge of collecting data about each student and their academic standings. EACS will administer pre-tests and assessments as well as post-tests and assessments and will be asking the Summer Program Coordinator to collect, organize, and review the results. As the Summer Program Coordinator, you will also oversee and manage Seattle Housing Authority/Seattle Youth Employment Program interns and provide support to instructors.

Preferred Qualifications:

 Currently pursuing or have a bachelors or post-secondary degree in Education or equivalent experience

 Experience in curriculum planning, teaching, and classroom management

 Good oral and written English skills

 Ability to multi-task and be flexible

 Ability to work independently and as a group member

 Familiarity and comfort working with elementary students and parents of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds

 Bilingual speaking ability is a plus, but not required

Commitment Required: Approximately 24 hours per week beginning on Monday, July 6th and ending on Thursday, August 13th, 2014 (Monday-Thursday, program does not run on Friday). Training and orientation will occur during the week of June 29th .

A background check is required.

Compensation: This is a volunteer position that is given a stipend at the end of the summer.
